NORTHRIDGE, CA, September 25, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Elyson and Dr. Assili, dentists in Northridge, now offer the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that has historically been treated with non-dental approaches. However, recent advances have made tolerable and effective dental treatments available. Dr. Assili has been treating sleep apnea for five years now as a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. While this is not always true, sleep apnea is often times associated with snoring, and it can have serious effects on health, as well as quality of life. Timely diagnosis and treatment is invaluable for afflicted patients, many of whom are unaware that they have sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is defined by the repeated interruptions in the breathing during sleep, resulting in low body oxygen and partial or full awakenings from the apnea episodes. Patients with the disorder tend to feel fatigued and breathless upon awakening, but they are puzzled at their exhaustion knowing that they slept all night. With these breathing interruptions, restorative sleep simply cannot occur and feeling exhausted throughout the day can take a toll on more than just the body. Common immediate sleep apnea symptoms include restlessness, snoring and frequent urination at night. Unfortunately, future complications as a result of sleep apnea can include diabetes, heart attack, stroke, sudden cardiac death, poor immunity and depression.
Conventional sleep apnea treatment has long been through continuous positive airways pressure, or CPAP therapy. This method requires patients to wear a mask over their nose and mouth, where it blows air through the airway from a machine placed at the bedside. While this can be effective at improving sleep quality, it is notoriously uncomfortable for many patients. Many times the uncomfortable nature of the machine results in patient's quitting their CPAP therapy on their own. Newer dental treatments include oral appliances and soft tissue removal surgery. While an oral appliance can keep the jaw and tongue from blocking the airway, soft tissue removal surgery can be an invasively affective method to widen the airway.
Dr. Elyson, and Dr. Assili, expert in dental implants in Northridge, graduated from California State University, Northridge with Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, respectively. Both went on to earn their Doctorates of Dental Surgery at UCLA School of Dentistry, as well as have furthered their expertise with post-graduate training in dental implants and cosmetic dentistry. Today, Dr. Elyson and Dr. Assili offer a full range of dental services, including TMJ diagnosis and treatment, Invisalign, tooth-colored fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and cosmetic care.
