Washington to Host International Luxembourg Forum Conference on Preventing Crisis of Nuclear Weapons Proliferation Control and Combating Nuclear Terrorism

The International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe conference on preventing the crisis of nuclear weapons proliferation control and combating catastrophic nuclear terrorism will take place on December 1-2, 2015 in Washington, D.C.



    WASHINGTON, DC, October 14, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe conference on preventing the crisis of nuclear arms control and catastrophic terrorism will take place on December 1-2, 2015 in Washington, D.C. The event will be held in association with the U.S.-based Nuclear Threat Initiative.

It is expected that the Conference will be attended by the President of the International Luxembourg Forum Viatcheslav Kantor; Member of the Luxembourg Forum Supervisory Board, former IAEA Director General Hans Blix; Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative Samuel Nunn; Member of the Luxembourg Forum Supervisory Board, Professor at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, former Chairman of the Committee on International Relations and Deputy Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vladimir Lukin; Vice Chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Convenor and a Member of the Top Level Group of UK Parliamentarians for Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Des Browne; Professor at Stanford University, former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry; Member of the Nuclear Threat Initiative Board of Directors, former OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Rolf Ekeus; Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences (former Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, Chairman of the State Committee of the USSR Council of Ministers for Science and Technology) Nikolay Laverov; Member of the Luxembourg Forum Supervisory Board, Professor at the University of Maryland, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Roald Sagdeev; Head of the Centre for International Security of the Institute for World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexei Arbatov; Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the International Luxembourg Forum, Vladimir Dvorkin, and other outstanding researchers and international experts on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.

Conference participants will discuss the most pressing issues and specific nuclear disarmament measures, ways to resolve the crisis of control over nuclear arms proliferation, solutions for fighting nuclear terrorism, decreased readiness to apply strategic weapons, and opportunities to improve cooperation between leading global nuclear powers and encourage multilateral dialogue. The Forum will also consider the role of restrictions on nuclear weapons in strengthening international security and strategic stability and will define threats to the nuclear non-proliferation regime. In addition, the conference will discuss issues related to Iran and North Korea.

On December 3, following the conference, the Supervisory Board of the Luxembourg Forum will meet to hear the annual progress report from Forum President Dr Viatcheslav Kantor and discuss further plans.

As usual, a final document prepared based on the conference results will present key conclusions and recommendations and be circulated to heads of state, officials and heads of leading international organizations. Final documents are drafted by Luxembourg Forum experts on a regular basis following each event and are valued by the global political leaders and heads of major international organizations who receive them. Generally, the recipients give consideration to the recommendations set out in these conclusions, as evidenced by their replies.

The International Luxembourg Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe was established pursuant to a decision of the International Conference on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe, held in Luxembourg on May 24-25, 2007. The Forum's Advisory Council includes 49 renowned experts from 14 countries.

The Forum is one of the most representative non-governmental organizations uniting leading world experts on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, arms reduction and limitation. The Forum is headed by its President, Viatcheslav Kantor, PhD. The principal guiding bodies of the Forum are its International Advisory Council and the Supervisory Council.

The Forum's priorities are to analyze threats imposed by nuclear weapons proliferation and elaborate practical proposals and recommendations on the ways to further reduce nuclear arms, strengthen nuclear and missile non-proliferation regime, counteract acquisition of nuclear weapons and technologies by unstable regimes and terroristic organizations, and resolve regional nuclear crises.
