"We as a community need to do more!!!", says Pastor Wayne "But the Mission's resources are stretched way to thin", "WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!!!"
SALT LAKE CITY, UT, October 01, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Hunger and poverty affects almost 50 Million Americans, including 16 Million children. The face of poverty and homelessness has changed from the long soup kitchen lines of homeless men living on the streets to even longer lines of men, women, children - the millions of working-class parents struggling to feed their families.
"More than 369 Thousand Utah residents live below the national poverty line," says Pastor Wayne Wilson, CEO of Salt Lake City Mission.
"Not only are we seeing more women and children coming for help," says Pastor Joe Vazquez, Assistant Director at the Mission. "But there is a new class of SUV poor." People that have been pushed out of their homes because of rising cost, lay-offs or reduced to part-time employment. They own vehicles but cannot afford to feed their families. Two out of every three households dealing with hunger have at least one working adult.
Many people are struggling in this weak economy. Surely most could use some additional finances but, nearly 40% of these households have to choose between purchasing food, paying rent and utilities, or other cost. Even the Mission is experiencing the biggest fight of its life, financially! Thousands more homeless are coming to the Mission in crisis and in desperate need; One organization that fed the homeless was forced to quit because they couldn't afford to do it anymore; costs are up higher than ever... more organizations are soliciting donations for other frivolous causes; Presidential elections are consuming donations at alarming rates while men, women and children are starving and dying on our streets ... "We as a community need to do more," says Pastor Wayne. "But the Mission's resources are stretched way to thin", "WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!"
This year's Launch of the "Season of Hope" includes many regular methods of help including food and clothing drives for which the Mission is known for. As well as, some new initiatives to "Fight Poverty." Including:
