Strong Fall Offerings Continue October 11th at Clarke

    LARCHMONT, NY, October 06, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- If early auction highlights are any indication of performance, Clarke will continue into the fall auction season with strong showings across the board on October 11th.

The October sale will be supported by a streamlined catalog of quality fine art and prints, 20th century design, sterling silver, jewelry and decorative arts.

The fine art selection will begin with 45 lots of nearly 100 original works by noted American illustrator, Richard Sargent, who is specifically known for his work in the Saturday Evening Post. The works vary in style, medium, and estimate but all encapsulate the great talent that Sargent had as an artist.

The most anticipated lot in the October sale is the original gouache on paper entitled "We packed our Mules in the Corral of the Hotel, "by Frederic Remington (est. $20,000/$30,000). The work is signed and dated 1889 in the lower left of the page. This original work was illustrated in Harper's Weekly, January 4, 1890, page 5 and the lot is accompanied by a copy of the publication.

Vying for a close second with significant pre-sale interest are several works including an acrylic on shaped canvas relief by Charles Hinman (est. $15,000/$25,000), a Calder tapestry (est. $3,000/$5,000), a Paul Jenkins watercolor (est. $3,000/$5,000), and a Picasso signed and turned pitcher depicting a fish (est. $2,000/$3,000).

Other important featured artworks include three lots of paintings by H. Claude Pissaro. Clarke will offer an oil on canvas called "L'Avenue Massena du Pritemps (Nice)" (est. $6,000/$9,000), another oil on canvas entitled "Bords de Seine a Villeneuve S'Georges" (est. $4,000/$6,000), and a pastel on paper inscribed "Fleuve Pris de El Roda en Egyte (est. $1,200/$1,800).

Even through the end of the selection, several pieces demand bidder attention including a Clayton Price abstract entitled "In the Forest" (est. $3,000/$5,000), a 1928 Harold Weston portrait of a reclining nude (est. $2,000/$3,000), and more.

Jewelry and sterling silver have become a focal point for many recent sales at Clarke. Perhaps most spectacular in the jewelry selection is a 4+ carat emerald cut diamond ring (est. $30,000/$50,000). The ring comes with complete and recent GIA appraisal and information.

October will also include a beautiful 104 piece set of Acorn Pattern flatware and accessories by Georg Jensen (est. $4,000/$6,000). Where there is silver in the sale, there is often gold, as is the case in the 18kt gold rare imported Patek, Phillipe & Geneve pocket watch (est. $5,000/$7,000). The matching serial numbers date the pocket watch to the early 1880s. Clarke will also offer an 18kt gold and enameled David Webb cuff bracelet (est. $3,000/$4,000) and a combination bracelet-watch in diamond and platinum by Hamilton (est. $4,000/$6,000).

The midcentury selection will feature a number of quality designer items from local estates. The most important lot of the selection may be the pair of Hans J. Wegner Papa Bear Chairs, produced for A.P Stolen (est. $10,000/$15,000). The chairs, sans cushions, are in a nice vintage green fabric with teak caps and legs. Clarke is excited to have a pair as that is unusual in the modern auction market.

There will also be two Paul Evans brutalist pieces featured in the selection. A PE-11 table (est. $2,000/$3,000) and a mixed metal and slate top wall mounted shelf (est.$1,000/$1,500) are the highlights of brutalist and the zig-zag form of the coffee table has great original polychrome colors in red, yellow, blue and gold.

Also seen in twos during previews are designs by Phillip and Kelvin Laverne. The "Spring Festival" labeled coffee table (est. $3,000/$4,000) is not only one of two examples by the designers, it is also signed twice to the top decorative scene. The other Laverne piece is an "Etruscan" game table (est. $4,000/$6,000).

George Nakashima's production line slat bench (est. $3,000/$5,000) rounds out the selection alongside the likes of Paul McCobb, Pace, and T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings.

Decorative art selections will be offered throughout the sale and include an array of items from a Tiffany Bookmark Pattery desk set (est. $1,500/$2,000) to a finely carved and gilt cherub mirror (est. $2,000/$3,000).

Asian objects remain desirable in October as well and Clarke will present many different pieces including a finely carved and pierced Jade plaque of figures (est. $300-$500) and a set of 4 Chinese porcelain figural plaques (est. $600-$900). Despite conservative estimates, the market should dictate the true value of the Chinese works.

In-house previews will be held Friday and Saturday, October 9th and 10th from 12pm to 6pm EST. The sale will begin October 11th at 12pm EST.
