Hosted every year by the National Fire Protection Association, the goal of Fire Prevention Week is to raise awareness of fire danger and steps individuals and families can take to reduce the risk. The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep," which stresses the importance of strategic placement of smoke alarms in each bedroom of a house or apartment.

Kim said that properly installing smoke detectors and regularly checking to see that they work is "an excellent first step" for fire safety in the home. In addition to being aware of conditions in the home, consumers should be aware of which household items could put them at risk.

"It might seem like there is a new product recall every week, but it is critical for consumers not to get complacent," he said. "The dangers of a product that could become a fire hazard are very serious and very real, and knowing about the danger is the best way to get an item out of your home or garage before it causes harm."
