Many people are under the mistaken impression that asbestos is no longer a danger.
NEW YORK, NY, October 15, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Do you think your home is free of asbestos? An infographic created by The Williams Law Firm reveals that more than 3,000 items commonly found in homes, garages and residential and commercial buildings - including insulation, carpet and flooring products, adhesives, paint, elevator components, car parts and more - could contain the dangerous material.
Asbestos has been used for decades in commercial goods and building materials. When the fibers are inhaled, they accumulate in the lungs and can result in tissue scarring and several types of lethal cancer.
Joseph Williams, New York City asbestos litigator and principal attorney at The Williams Law Firm, said the intent of the infographic is to inform people of a danger that could hit close to home - literally.
"Many people are under the mistaken impression that asbestos is no longer a danger," Williams said. "Tragically, it still is, since the material appeared in thousands of items that consumers and homeowners used every day. Importantly, these materials were often never removed or replaced, and cause exposures when disturbed. That is why it's so important to raise awareness about the prevalence of asbestos."
Using custom imagery and facts gathered from sources like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Williams Law Firm infographic covers subjects including:
- The prevalence of asbestos in the United States
- Its health effects, including the deadly cancer mesothelioma and lung-scarring asbestosis
- Consumer products, building materials and vehicle components that may contain asbestos
- What to do if you suspect asbestos is in your home, including steps to diagnose the problem and remove it
According to data gathered by the firm, more than 30 million pounds of asbestos are used in the United States each year. Approximately 13,500 Americans die from asbestos exposure annually.
