Ms. Deans believes you learn from doing and by emulating expertise. She attributes her success to her commitment to continually build relationships and connections with people throughout the course of her career. Through connecting with people who are doing great things, Ms. Deans believes she can emulate what they do. She also credits a degree of her success to her mentors, including Steve Heron, who was recently nominated as a local community hero in the Australian and Western Australian of the Year Awards. Ms. Deans intends to use this platform to make people more aware of how Mr. Heron has contributed to the education of students for over fourteen years with his BUZ initiatives. As Values Education Project Officer for Western Australia, Ms. Deans provided professional support for educational associations and schools for values education in line with the Western Australian Curriculum Framework and the then new National Framework for Values Education in Australian schools. She would like to see governments take a more proactive approach and provide funding for social and emotional well being for all children. Most importantly, she hopes to make a difference by making people more aware that it is better to build up young children than fix broken teenagers and adults. She believes that if we have made a difference in just one life, it makes it all worth it.
