Woodbury University Celebrates Its Growing Commitment to Community at Annual Civic Engagement Symposium

    LOS ANGELES, CA, October 22, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Students, faculty and staff, alumni and members of the local community will gather for the Annual Woodbury Civic Engagement (CE) Symposium, slated for Thurs., Nov. 12, from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., in Woody's Dining Hall on the Woodbury campus. Guests will have an opportunity to view an exhibition of 14 civic-minded projects designed and spearheaded by members of the Woodbury community. There is no charge, and lunch will be served.

As a part of the symposium, the Architecture + Civic Engagement (ACE) Center will make a special announcement about its expanded mission and name change.

"Today, 'civic engagement' is one of four pillars that serve as the foundation of a Woodbury education," said Jeanine Centuori, Director of the ACE Center and Associate Professor of Architecture at Woodbury University. "The Architecture + Civic Engagement (ACE) Center has been re-branded as the Agency for Civic Engagement to better reflect its expanded mission of providing every Woodbury student with the opportunity to learn while serving the needs of nonprofit and community groups. "

In addition to the ACE Center announcement, the civic engagement symposium will provide a platform for students and faculty to display and discuss civic engagement initiatives they have worked on over the past year. It also will feature guest speaker Rick Nahmias, executive director of Food Forward, an organization whose mission is to rescue local produce that would otherwise go to waste, and give it to people in need.

"This event brings together the Woodbury community and allows for us to see the wonderful achievements and strides that are being made in our neighboring community," said Dr. Danielle Ramirez, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Marketing at Woodbury. In addition to teaching, Dr. Ramirez is also a liaison to the new Agency for Civic Engagement. "Our mission with the ACE center is to encourage and support collaboration across campus as well as within the community."

"The new Agency for Civic Engagement creates a mechanism by which we can eventually gauge and measure the quantity and quality of Civic Engagement performed by all our students," said Randy Stauffer, Interim Provost at Woodbury. "Civic Engagement has long been an important value here at Woodbury, through required core courses in the School of Business, optional studios and seminars in the School of Architecture, required outreach projects in the School of Media, Culture and Design, and through many other academic and co-curricular activities."
