GALWAY, IRELAND, October 29, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Financial Times recently revealed regions in the UK & Ireland that have the highest rates of start-up businesses (www.ft.com, 16th June 2015, Start-up map shows the most enterprising regions). While London has the highest rate of start-ups in the UK, it is entrepreneurs in Northern Ireland who are the most likely to reach GBP1m turnover within three years of establishment (10.8% between 2011-2014). In Leeds this figure is 7.1%, Birmingham 7.4%, Sheffield 6.8% and Manchester 6.9%.
Throughout the UK & Ireland, around 6% of businesses achieve a turnover of GBP1m in three years, but in Northern Ireland it is as much as 10%. This is because the region is home to a booming technology sector and has plentiful public funding for business loans and grants. In addition, the city of Belfast has a skilled workforce and its small market gave a good foundation from which to grow.
In July this year, Chambers Ireland called on Government to use the tax system to foster a culture of entrepreneurship in all sectors of the economy. The call came as the Department of Finance undertakes a review on tax and entrepreneurship and is supported by local firm Paragon Worldwide Acquisitions.
The report by the Financial Times surveyed small and medium enterprises and found that a poor business strategy and management was the biggest barrier to growth. 53% of SMEs citied this reason, with 39% blaming a lack of skills in the workforce and 27% blamed it on access to finance.
Yet, the general attitude towards entrepreneurship is uplifting. At the forefront of the many pioneering initiatives which have emerged from the UK & Ireland in recent years is Cork innovates, a well-established regional initiative with a highly respected reputation as an independent player in the enterprise support eco-system.
