GRAND FORKS, ND, November 14, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Krista Houska, 8th Grade English Teacher for Grand Forks Public Schools, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Kristi Houska will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.
Beginning her teaching career at Central High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Kristi Houska is now teaching 8th grade English at Schroeder Middle School. While the study of English integrates communications skills in order to improve reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills, along with technology enrichment, Ms. Houska also plans and implements lessons and units covering the common core standards, assesses student progress, communicates results to students and parents regularly, meets with team teachers daily, reviews and updates student Individualized Education Plans and 504's for those with issues like ADHD, ADD, asthma, and allergies, and much more. At the middle school level, she teaches the same team of students, so they are able to effectively focus on individualizing student instruction and curriculum, reflecting and improving teaching techniques and strategies.
"I am a people person and I especially love working with young people," Ms. Houska said about her teaching career. "Over the last 30 years there have been many change and new initiatives. Through it all I have remembered that I must teach my students first, then the subject matter. Students many not remember much of what they learn, but they will remember the way they were treated. I'm not in it for the income; I'm in it for the outcome."
Learning the value of a good education from her parents, Ms. Houska earned a Bachelor's and Master's in Education from the University of North Dakota. She continues to benefit from professional development opportunities, with the most rewarding being her participation with the National Writing Project and the Red River Valley Writing Project. Over the course of her 30-year career in education, Ms. Houska has taught nearly every level of English and approximately 2,700 students.
Ms. Houska is the recipient of an Ecolab Grant for student books and dictionaries. She has also spent time as the Jr. Classical League and Latin Club where she coordinated fundraising events and helped students register and compete in knowledge bowls and other competitions at National Jr. Classical League Conventions.
