George J. Counelis, MD, Maintains Presence in the Neurosciences Field

A board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Counelis uses advanced medical procedures in oncology



    WALNUT CREEK, CA, November 18, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Board Certified neurosurgeon and specialist in complex brain and spine problems, George J. Counelis, MD, FAANS, FACS, has been recognized for his dedication and leadership in transforming care for neuro-oncology and neurosurgery patients in the Bay Area. He received his medical training at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. After a post-doctoral clinical fellowship in cerebral blood flow at UCLA, he completed his internship and six years of neurosurgical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During his training at the University of Pennsylvania, he completed fellowships in brain tumor research and complex spine surgery. In 2004, Dr. Counelis joined the medical staff of John Muir Health and was chosen as the first Medical Director of the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Program. He is also a Clinical Instructor at The University of California, San Francisco Department of Neurological Surgery and President of Bay Area Neurosciences, where he and his colleagues are committed to providing the highest value patient care.

As the Medical Director of the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Program at John Muir Health, Dr. Counelis leads physicians and ancillary staff to enhance the Neuro-Oncology program, which serves as an all-inclusive treatment option for patients with primary and metastatic tumors of the brain and spine, pituitary tumors, meningiomas and vestibular schwannnomas. He provides continuing education for the medical community, addressing physicians through speaking presentations about the role of stereotactic radiosurgery for neuro-oncology patients. He performs microsurgery, minimally invasive spinal surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery, allowing his patients to spend less time in the hospital and heal in a timely manner with less pain. Outside of the operating room and clinic, Dr. Counelis continues to develop his expertise while spending time researching clinical trials to identify new and innovative treatment options for his patients. Additionally, Dr. Counelis provides neurosurgical trauma care at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek--the busiest Level II Trauma Center in California.

Dr. Counelis has 20 years of experience overall in the medical field.

A Patients' Choice Award winner, Dr. Counelis attributes his success to his perseverance. He also credits his desire and commitment to treating his patients. On reflection, Dr. Counelis pursued his profession because of his lifelong interest in medicine and surgery specifically. His decision to become a neurological surgeon was a natural result of his interest in brain function and oncology. He believes that molecular biology and biologically targeted approaches are the future for treating cancer. One of the highlights of his career was founding the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Program at John Muir Health, which treats patients using a multidisciplinary approach. The program emphasizes comprehensive treatment of patients and dedication to maintaining their quality of life.

A recent inductee into Worldwide Registry, he also maintains affiliations with the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the San Francisco Neurological Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
