NEWPORT BEACH, CA, December 02, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan G. Komen Orange County honored 27 outstanding Race for the Cure teams at its 2015 Team Captain Celebration on Nov. 19 in Newport Beach. Groups comprised of corporations, nonprofits and friends and families, united in celebration of their successful fundraising efforts - which supported the nearly $1.5 million raised for the nonprofit - and a common vision: a world without breast cancer. Teams were honored in seven categories based on size and type.
"Komen Orange County would not be able to carry out the work we do without the fundraising efforts of our dedicated supporters," said Stacy Davis, interim executive director of Komen Orange County. "With the hard work of Race for the Cure teams and their passionate captains, we are able to continue mission-driven initiatives, which include providing critical breast health services and education to our community."
Awards were presented to the following:
• Perpetual Trophy: Dana West Yacht Club Shipmates - This award was given to the team that raised the most money at this year's Race for the Cure. Dana West Yacht Club Shipmates of 27 members raised more than $26,000. A 10-year supporter of Race for the Cure, Dana West Yacht Club has raised nearly $180,000.
• Rookie of the Year Award Sponsored by Angels Baseball: OC All-Stars - This award was given to the new Race for the Cure team that raised the most money. OC All-Stars was made up of 107 team members who raised nearly $15,000. The group was led by team captain Kari Webster.
• Largest Race Team: First American's Caring for our Community team - Another loyal supporter and sponsor of Komen Orange County's Race, First American's Caring for our Community was honored for being the largest Race for the Cure team with 368 team members. The team was led by breast cancer survivor Stephanie Hathaway.
544 teams participated at the 2015 Race for the Cure. Among the top 25 teams, groups were recognized for their hard work and dedication to raising funds for Komen OC in the following categories:
• Top 3 Large Corporate Teams - First American's Caring for our Community team took the top spot in the large corporate team category, and raised nearly $24,000. Team Experian ranked second with a team fundraising total of nearly $22,000, followed by Opus Bank's Team Leanne with $21,000 raised for breast cancer research and education.
• Top 3 Small Corporate Teams - For the fourth year in a row, Dana West Yacht Club Shipmates grabbed first place. OC All-Stars came in second and Greenberg Traurig LLP landed in third with nearly $3,000 raised.
• Top 3 Nonprofit Teams - Coming in first place in the nonprofit category was Hoag, raising more than $23,000. Team Think Pink Inc. raised more than $15,000 for second place and in third was Team OCO with more than $5,000 raised.
• Top 3 Friends and Family Teams - Komen Cures raised nearly $25,000 and won first place in this category. Healthy Hooters came in second place with more than $13,000 raised, and Team Storage Solution was in third with more than $11,000 raised.
At the event, team captains, co-captains and their friends and families joined Komen OC to salute their efforts in raising funds for the 2015 Race for the Cure, and mobilize supporters to join the fight against breast cancer.
