BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, December 10, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The aftermath of the Paris attacks and the terror threats in Belgium have had a severe impact on the travel behaviour of the Belgian population. Figures from www.vakantiedeals.be, one of the leading travel websites in Belgium clearly show that consumers have changed their travel behaviour. Destinations like the Canary Islands and Cabo Verde are clear winners for those who are looking for beach holidays for this winter, at the expense of countries like Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia. Cuba, The Dominican Republic and Florida are also benefiting from this change in attitude. Only Dubai, towards the east, seems to maintain its status as a sunny and safe destination.
The change in behaviour after the Paris attacks and the subsequent terror threats in and around Brussels are hardly surprising, but the scope and the speed of the change is. "Compared with last year, we are definately seeing lower sales" explains Jurgen De Vos, the owner of the website."Belgians are delaying their bookings after the Government in November changed the terror threat level to 4, which is the maximum. But it seems that new destinations, that are beeing perceived as safe, are benefitting. The Canary Islands have always been a top destination in the winter, but Cabo Verde, a former Portuguese colony of the coast of Senegal, is growing as an alternative with its warm climat and only 1 hour extra flight time.
Some countries in the Carabbean are also seeing higher sales numbers: Cuba, The Dominican Republic and Jamaica are being perceived as safe and sunny, as is Florida. The only country in the Middle East that has shown some growth is the UAE, with Dubai as its main attraction.
Summer 2016: Croatia, Bulgaria and Italy
Whether this behaviour will continue for the summer booking season is definately not certain yet. "We are noticing more interest for certain countries. Croatia, Bulgaria and Italy are attracting more clicks and views for the summer of 2016. Spain has long been a favourite for the Belgian market, but demand might be exceeding supply this year, so it's in the consumers interest to book early," says Jurgen De Vos.
