Knowing how a child feels about potential safety issues can help administrators and parents address school safety from an entirely different perspective--the child's.
PHOENIX, AZ, December 16, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- What does a 12-year-old know about school safety? Quite a bit, according to an educational technology company who is helping families and teachers focus on school safety from a kid's perspective.
Talking to Kids About School Safety is an activity that helps parents and educators discover students' perceptions of safety at their school, and it's being released as a free digital download.
The guide was designed by the National School Safety Center and educational technology company VisdomK12 in an effort to facilitate a discussion about safety and to identify issues that may require a response from adults.
David Brake, CEO of VisdomK12, says talking about school safety is more important than ever, noting the ever-growing number of schools facing threats ranging from social media bullying to potential violence on school premises.
"Kids have certain perceptions of safety at their school," Brake said. "Talking to Kids About School Safety creates an opportunity for conversation about safety in the classroom as well as the family room."
The guide is being released preparatory to the debut of VisdomK12's crowdsourcing technology that will enable school districts to capture the collective insights of teachers, administrators, and support professionals - and it's the first time this kind of crowdsourcing technology is being used to assess school safety.
"Without a safe environment to learn and work in, everything else is compromised," Brake said. "Even the perception of vulnerability can cause anxiety that interrupts the learning process. Knowing how a child feels about potential safety issues can help administrators and parents address school safety from an entirely different perspective--the child's."
