YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES, December 23, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gail P. Cyr was recently named a VIP member of Worldwide Branding. This special distinction honors individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving personal and professional success.
Adept at working with others and problem-solving, Ms. Cyr recently served as the interim executive director of the Native Women's Association of the NWT. In this position, her responsibilities included aiding the organization until a full-time person was hired and generally managing the organization and staff. Established in 1977, The Native Women's Association of the NWT is a nonprofit organization that provides empowerment and support for aboriginal women and their families throughout the Northwest Territories of Canada. They also provide programs that ensure all native ancestry will be treated with dignity, respect and equality, as well as benefits and services that are extended to all, including a training center, aboriginal skills and employment training strategies, and Yellowknife victim services. During her few months with the organization, Ms. Cyr organized an event to recognize the end of the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission devoted to hearing of students forced into Canada's Residential Schools, and worked with Victims Services to assist families who lost their homes due to fire.
A hard worker and an avid reader, Ms. Cyr has seen many professional successes throughout her career. She is the former Special Advisor to the Minister Responsible for Women, as well as the former Legislative and Political Development Advisor for elected community governments and the Chief Municipal Electoral Officer for Municipal and Community Affairs with the GNWT. Early in her career, she established the Native Court Workers Association, a legal services program to assist Indigenous People understand Criminal and Civil Law issues.
Ms. Cyr is an active community member working for National Aboriginal Day as stage manager or MC for this event and others. She maintains affiliations with the North Words Writers, the Coalition Against Family Violence and Rotary International. She is a costume maker devoting thousands of hours for the stage when she is not actually performing. Additionally, as a testament to her professional prowess, she was recently awarded the Chair's Commendation by the Order of St. John. She was also the recipient of the national Indigenous Indspire Award recipient for public service in 2013, and a Diamond Jubilee recipient in 2012.
