OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, January 11, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The law firm of Burch, George & Germany congratulates the three winners of our second annual Teen Safety Oklahoma Scholarship Contest.
The contest is designed to assist students with college expenses while promoting greater public understanding of the dangers of distracted driving, which is a serious traffic safety hazard in Oklahoma.
Students entered the contest by submitting essays to raise awareness of Oklahoma's recently enacted ban on texting while driving. The new law, named the Trooper Nicholas Dees and Trooper Keith Burch Act of 2015, allows police to pull over drivers who are texting behind the wheel and issue a $100 fine. The law took effect in November 2015.
The scholarship contest winners were selected from more than 100 entries. The winners are:
First Place--Catherine McNeill, a student at the University of Oklahoma who received a $2,500 scholarship for an essay, "Be the Driver We Can Trust: How I Will Raise Awareness of Texting While Driving Ban."
Second Place--Carol Van Dyne, a student at Shawnee High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma, won a $1000 scholarship.
Third Place--Katelyn Dinh, a student at the University of Central Oklahoma, received a $500 scholarship
"We congratulate the winners and thank all those who entered the contest," said Derek Burch, a founding partner of Burch, George & Germany, P.C. "Obtaining a college education is an important step to having a fulfilling career and pursuing your life goals. We are pleased to be able to assist these talented students in further their educations."
As Oklahoma City personal injury attorneys, we represent individuals who sustained serious injuries and families who lost loved ones in car accidents. We recognize the lasting harm that distracted drivers can cause. Young people in their teens and 20s are disproportionately involved in texting while driving accidents, according to federal statistics. As civic leaders in our community, we want to do everything in our power to make our communities safer places to live and raise families.
