Born in Mississippi in 1954, Winfrey came from a poor background and when her parents drifted apart shortly after her birth she was left to be brought up by her grandmother a firm but caring disciplinarian. At six years old Winfrey moved to Wisconsin to live with her mother in an urban Ghetto. With her mother still failing to play a significant role in her life Winfrey was left vulnerable and was subjected to abuse. This abuse caused her to act out until her mother couldn't cope and sent her to live with her father in Nashville. Winfrey's father had positive influence on her, his love of learning helped Winfrey accept that she had the potential to be or do anything and encouraged her not to put limits on herself. With her father's support Winfrey fast became an honor student and discovered a passion for public speaking. Whilst studying speech and drama at Tennessee State, she was approached by WTVF-TV who wanted her to join them as a news anchor, accepting the offer Winfrey become the channels first female, black co-anchor.
After working as a news anchor for a short time Winfrey was fired, as her inability to hide her emotions when reporting was deemed unprofessional. However she was quickly snapped up for a new show called 'People are Talking' which provided her with an opportunity to build on her talent for connecting to people emotionally. She soon moved on to acting which raised her profile and paved the way for the 'Oprah Winfrey Show'. After becoming America's third highest rated show Winfrey set up her own production company and took over ownership of the show, becoming only the third woman on American television to do so.
CG International is certain that Oprah's rags to riches story offers budding entrepreneurs a lot of food for thought. Winfrey refused to let herself be defined by her past experiences and instead of dwelling on the terrible things that happened to her, channelled these experiences into fuel to power her forward towards better things. As a human embodiment of the American Dream, Oprah Winfrey's story show's that with a positive mind set and an unwavering determination success is possible, and that challenges can be overcome. By committing to consistent hard work over a reasonable period of time, Winfrey was able to build a successful career and change her life for the better.
