NIAGARA FALLS, NY, January 30, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) applauds the Mattel toy company for embracing body diversity as the new versions of their iconic Barbie doll go on sale today. Following suit with the ever-growing body positive movement, Barbie now comes in tall, petite and curvy.
Ninety-two percent of American girls, ages three to 12, have owned a Barbie. And the cultural impacts of this blonde bombshell can be seen everywhere. But if the original Barbie's measurements were applicable to a real woman, it would be anatomically impossible, as she would be unable to walk or hold her head up.
Commented Claire Mysko, interim CEO of NEDA, "A range of body types exists naturally in the world, but that reality is rarely reflected in the toys children play with, the shows they watch and the retouched, 'perfect' ads to which they are exposed. We are thrilled to see a company like Mattel use its influence in the global marketplace to promote body diversity and self-acceptance. It's simply the right thing to do."
Over the years, Mattel has maintained that Barbie had no influence on girls' body image ... But experts disagree. Among them, a 2006 study published in the Journal of Developmental Psychology found that girls exposed to Barbie at a young age expressed greater concern with being thin, compared with those exposed to other dolls. NEDA is pleased to see that Mattel is acting responsibly and evolving their products to meet the needs of consumers.
