LOS ANGELES, CA, February 25, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Cary Presant, author of "Surviving American Medicine" has announced Concussion with Will Smith as the winner of his 3rd Annual HOME Awards in the Huffington Post. The HOME Awards (Health Oriented Motion picture Excellence) honor film entertainment that accurately depicts health issues.
Dr. Presant, a City of Hope staff oncologist and hematologist, and author of "Surviving American Medicine," created the HOME Awards to recognize health themed movies, which have the potential to go beyond entertainment and transform our existence.
"Movies can serve as a source of family discussions, social dialogue, and even political debate," said Dr. Presant. "Health issues are among the 10 most important issues of our time, and the most important issue for families facing health and/or medical insurance problems. Portrayals of these issues in good movies can serve as catalysts for conversations that can change our attitudes and affect our decisions."
Concussion was declared the winner over the 4 other HOME nominees: Grandma, Freeheld, Pawn Sacrifice and The Farewell Party. Dr. Presant applauds Will Smith, whose portrayal of pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu realistically demonstrates the results of repeated concussions. According to Dr. Presant, "The film calls our attention to the issue of concussion and consequences of brain trauma. Over 1.8 million concussions occur annually in sports, and even more occur through accidents, falls, violence, and combat injuries." Dr. Presant adds that concussions resulting in emergency room visits and hospital admissions cost the American economy $60 billion each year.
Concussion now joins the previous winners of Dr. Cary Presant's HOME Awards: 2014 with Still Alice (addressing the issue of dementia), and 2013 with Dallas Buyers Club (portraying issues of life threatening diagnosis, finding a good doctor, and access to research drugs."
