LOS ANGELES, CA, March 14, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For over thirty years, UCLA's Black Alumni Association has honored exceptional Black UCLA Alumnus with prestigious awards during their Legacy Scholarship Dinner. On Saturday, March 19th at 6pm UBAA will rename the event the Winston C. Doby Legacy Scholarship Dinner and welcome alumni, students, friends, family and community influencers including Attorney Rickey Ivie, Dr. Don Sanders, the Honorable Yvonne Burke and News Reporter, LaMonica Peters as mistress of ceremonies, to this year's dinner.
UBAA 2016 will honor four Freedom Ride participants with the Ralph Bunche Humanitarian Award, and Edward Barnett with their top award, the UBAA Tom Bradley Alumnus of the Year Award, named after the first African American Mayor of Los Angeles. This award is given to the top UBAA alumni who has demonstrated outstanding excellence in their field.
In addition to the awards ceremony the Winston C. Doby Legacy Scholarship Dinner is a platform to raise money for African American students to attend UCLA. UBAA aims to endow a scholarship program with $2 million over the next 4 years, starting with this year's event which aims to raise $140,000; a strong start to their $2 million goal.
Past award honorees include: Christine Simmons (COO of LA Sparks), Judge Joe Brown,Virgil Roberts (Entertainment Attorney), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Retired NBA All-Star), Jackie Joyner Kersee (Retired Olympic Gold medalist), Marian Wright Edelman (American Activist) and Jesse Jackson (Civil Rights Activist).
2016 HONOREES: Edward Barnett (Tom Bradley Alumnus of the Year Award), India Carney (Maddie Norman Award), Peter J. Taylor (Chairman's Award), Dr, Josephine Isabel-Jones (Jackie Robinson Award), Shirley Jo Finney (Beverly Robinson Performing Arts Award), Lisa Cagnolatti-Daniels (Arther Ashe Award), Robert Farrell (Ralph Bunche Humanitarian Award), Dr. Robert Singleton (Ralph Bunche Humanitarian Award), Max Pavesic (Ralph Bunche Humanitarian Award) and Helen Singleton (Ralph Bunche Humanitarian Award). With LaMonica Peters (News Reporter and Anchor for Time Warner Cable) as mistress of ceremonies.
