Colorado Reports Opiate Usage Increases Mimicking Nationwide Trend

Families Encouraged to Look for Signs of Drug and Alcohol Addiction and Seek Assistance

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Colorado had a 5.2% increase in drug and opioid overdose death from 2013 to 2014.

FORT COLLINS, CO, April 01, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Colorado had a 5.2% increase in drug and opioid overdose death from 2013 to 2014. Hospitalizations and emergency room visits for heroin and opium also increased and were greatest among people ages 18 to 34, according to the most recent data provided to the state health department by the Colorado Hospital Association.

Due to the substantial increase in opiate usage, families of individuals who suspect drug usage and/or alcoholism should be made aware of detection indicators and help individuals seek treatment.

"Signs that an individual is an addict may not be easily noticed," said Marcus Hansen, CEO, Addiction Advocates. "One of the most common signs of addiction is withdrawal; the user may experience noticeable physical and mood changes without substance usage."

Signs of drug abuse and alcoholism may also include:
- Exhibits an inability to stop using a drug or drinking. May make serious but unsuccessful attempts to quit.
- Refusal to acknowledge or admit to substance abuse problem.
- Avoids certain social situations, such as declining an invitation to go camping, because he will be unable to drink.
- Maintaining a full stock of a substance becomes important, even when bills are not paid because the money is being spent on the addiction.
- An inability to handle stress or deal with problems without using the substance.
- A sudden increase in appetite can be a sign of alcoholism or drug abuse.

Addiction Advocates offer subsidized or 100% free intervention services for individuals seeking treatment in order to drastically decrease the number of addiction related deaths in Colorado.
