BETHESDA, MD, April 08, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- James P. Kelly, Neurologist and Director of the Department of Defense at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in neurology.
Dr. Kelly brings 32 years of professional experience to his role as a Director and Neurologist of the Department of Defense at National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE). Throughout his career, he has set himself apart through his work with traumatic brain injuries, as well as concussions in athletes and military personnel. Each day, he volunteers as a faculty member while working with military members and warriors returning home, as well as athletes who have TBI and/or concussions.
The National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) is on the campus of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda. He used to be with University of Colorado Hospital-Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion. He is currently a volunteer faculty member.
Currently, Dr. Kelly is on a leave of absence from his position as professor of neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His past positions in that role include the titles of assistant dean for graduate medical education at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and the neurology residency program director at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Dr. Kelly has also served as director of the brain injury program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. He was the neurological consultant for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League and is consulted frequently by professional, elite amateur and youth athletes who have sustained concussions. Dr. Kelly co-authored the sports concussion guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology and the Standardized Assessment of Concussion that is widely used in athletic and military settings.
He became involved in his profession because there was an unspoken expectation that he would be the doctor in the family.
Dr. Kelly completed a residency through the University of Colorado in 1988 and also completed an internship in neurology at Michigan State University at Kalamazoo in 1985. He received a master's degree in psychology from Western Michigan University, and he holds a certification in neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. In recognition of his dedication, he has been named among the Top Doctors in America in Neurology by Castle Connolly in 2015. In the coming years, he intends to move into the private sector and make the model of care available to all who may need it. He also plans to integrate the practice of interdisciplinary care. He would like to see a national effort to better understand when warriors return home.
