LOS ANGELES, CA, April 21, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With a cure for a number of cancers within reach during the next 5-10 years-Hematologist and Medical Oncologist Dr. Cary Presant is calling on cancer scientists, doctors, researchers and hospital administrators to push up their timetables for implementing cancer fighting research and treatments.
"Vice President Biden's announcement this week that $800 million dollars has been earmarked for cancer research- out of the $2 billion federal budget increase for the NIH, is reason to believe that innovative proposals will be funded, which will ultimately improve patient care," says Dr. Presant.
The author of the patient advocacy book, Surviving American Medicine says the goals set by the President Obama's 'Cancer Moonshot' will result in more intense focus on pilot programs that will improve access, increase clinical trials, and result in shared results of data to improve patient care.
"At my institution, City of Hope Hospital, we have already begun planning new patient programs for the Cancer Moonshot which will make new treatments available to our patients," reveals Dr. Presant. "And, at least one cooperative research group is seeking (and funding) new projects to the Cancer Moonshot intitative."
Dr. Presant adds, The additional federal funding and the White House task force power give us reasons to believe we can increase cure rates within 5-10 years, but we have to start today, to help save lives. 1 year is absolutely a realistic timetable for jump- starting the research and treatments made possible by the Cancer Moonshot.
In his latest Huffington Post article, Dr. Presant offers a number of valuable tips for cancer patients, and for those who do not have cancer, ways to be more pro-active in prevention, early screening and gene testing.
