Purelements Dance Performance Celebrates Cultural Diversity in East New York

Performing arts company Purelements hosts the second annual "East New York in Motion," a celebration of culture, music and dance featuring Amira Mor, Something Positive, Bangladesh Institute, St. Paul Dance Ministries, Tiffany Benson and more.



East New York in Motion is a sharing and celebration of cultures, ideas and beliefs and works to be a safe space where we can challenge each other toward greater manifestations of our creative selves.

    NEW YORK, NY, May 02, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Purelements celebrates music, dance and cultural diversity in the East New York community in second annual "East New York in Motion" at St. Paul Community Baptist Church on May 7th at 7pm.

Following 10 consecutive weeks of free community dance classes, performing arts company Purelements will highlight the various cultures of the East New York community in a celebration of music and dance in "East New York in Motion." Participating dance companies include Amira Mor, Something Positive, Bangladesh Institute, St. Paul Dance Ministries, Purelements and performances by Tiffany Benson, poet Jaime Lewis and video presentation by ArtsENY. The 2-hour performance will feature Bellydance, Caribbean, African, Salsa, Hip-Hop and Contemporary dance performances by company members as well as local youth performers.

First premiering in 2015, East New York in Motion was conceived by Purelements founders Lakai Worrell and Kevin Joseph as an expression of cultural unification and a platform to create respect, understanding, and appreciation among people of various backgrounds in East New York. In an effort to eradicate negative stereotypes that exist about the community, East New York in Motion is introduced as a tool to inspire and strengthen the community connection, ultimately assisting in the transformation and the narrative of East New York. Purelements seeks to expand the vision of local politicians to understand the powerful impact of the arts in the community showcase the richness of the East New York community.

"In the Hip Hop culture you have the cypher, which is the open circle where people come to share their creative energy. It is a safe space where we can lovingly challenge each other to keep pushing towards even greater manifestations of our creative selves. "East New York in Motion" works to do the same as it is not just a performance but it is a sharing and celebration of cultures, ideas and beliefs. From the free dance classes, to the open forum discussion and the dance presentations, we are working to learn more about one another and engage in conversation that moves us towards reaching new levels together," says Co-Director, Lakai Worrell.
