Pristine Agency Warns Travelers of Longer TSA Lines This Summer

The Transportation Security Administration is warning passengers to arrive at least two hours early because of massive wait times getting through security checkpoints this summer.

HENDERSON, NV, May 11, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Long lines for airline travelers were supposed to be resolved by a program that was implemented four years ago called TSA PreCheck. Airline passengers who wanted to pass through checkpoints faster could apply for a pass that would cost between $85 and $100 every five years. They would also need to show up at the airport for an interview before their PreCheck pass was issued. Perhaps the cost as well as the hassle of making the trip to the airport for the interview was the cause of the program falling short of the expected applicants.

As a result, the PreCheck lines have been empty while regular lines are backed up. Keeping the PreCheck lines open became expensive, yet the TSA couldn't close them so as not to annoy the passengers who went to the trouble of acquiring them.

The lack of applicants caused problems as the TSA had already laid off 10% of its workers that they didn't expect to need once the PreCheck program took off. The PreCheck program allows for special screenings to passengers who were accepted. Passengers would not need to remove shoes, belts and jackets and laptops and liquids could be kept in their bags. This process moves passengers through check in at a rate of 300 per hour which is double the normal rate.

The TSA temporarily tried to fix the problem by pulling certain people over to the express lanes, but the fear of letting a dangerous passenger get through stopped that practice unless there were bomb sniffing dogs present.

At this point there doesn't seem to be any easy or quick fix to the long wait time. The longer waits, especially during summer months, are encouraging more and more people to apply for their PreCheck passes however, even with the estimated 250,000 people applying right now; it may take ten years before the goal is met.
