Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Maureen Kendrick Murphy, PhD as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

    MONTGOMERY, AL, May 21, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Maureen Kendrick Murphy, PhD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Huntingdon College, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Maureen Kendrick Murphy, PhD will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016.

Prior to obtaining her current role at Huntingdon College, Murphy taught at the University of Alabama and Russellville High School. Today, as Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1997, she is making a big impact on both students and faculty.

"The number of chemistry and biochemistry majors in our department has almost quadrupled from 20 in 2005 to 75 in 2016," she said happily.

Throughout her teaching career, Murphy has taught diverse courses in chemistry and the core, including General Chemistry, Metals in Biological Systems, and a Critical Thinking first-year seminar. She served as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of the First-Year Experience program, designed several educational programs, and has won every teaching award at Huntingdon; some twice. Murphy also co-authored a textbook in 1992, entitled 'Metals in Biological Systems', which was used to teach bio-inorganic chemistry courses when the field was just becoming an accepted field of chemistry.

A graduate of Huntington College herself, Murphy holds a BA in Chemistry Magna Cum Laude. She also holds a PhD in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of South Carolina, and served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago.

Active as a member of American Chemical Society for 32 years and the National Exchange Club, the Club is known for youth projects and the prevention of child abuse. In the future, Murphy hopes to establish her own K-6 elementary school with her husband where curriculum would be based upon the principle of "science first".
