TRAVERSE CITY, MI, June 03, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The problem of long lines when traveling by air was supposed to be resolved a few years ago with the implementation of the PreCheck pass designed to move already prescreened passengers more quickly through security. The program still has the potential to greatly speed up the process however, the number of people who have signed up has fallen well below expectations, resulting in empty PreCheck lanes. Compounding the problem, TSA assumed they would need less staff with the implementation of PreCheck which resulted in prematurely laying off security personnel and so now they are left shorthanded.
People are starting to understand the importance of signing up for the PreCheck as word gets out about the program. There is a cost of $85 and a mandatory in person interview but it should be well worth the effort to avoid the long lines. The pass is good for five years and allows prescreened passengers to use the express kiosks where there is no need to remove shoes, jackets, liquids, laptops and shoes. The express lanes are expected to move people through at a rate twice that of the non-express lanes.
The best way to avoid the longs lines is to apply for the PreCheck as soon as possible. Until then, pack as light as possible and avoid carrying on items such as liquids and sharp objects that will flag a bag search and slow the process. Travelers should also choose the lines where people don't seem to have a lot of luggage that can take up time. Often a TSA agent can direct people to where the shorter lines are. There are several check-in gates throughout the airport, any of which can be used by travelers.
