New SAFO Guidelines on Lithium Ion Batteries

    NEW YORK, NY, June 06, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The FAA has recently released a new SAFO regarding new regulations for the shipping and transportation of lithium ion batteries. This SAFO affects 14 CFR part 121, 125, 129, and 135 operators.

These new regulations went into effect on April 1, 2016, and change how UN3480 lithium ion batteries can be shipped.
- They may NOT be shipped as cargo on any passenger aircraft.
- They MUST be labeled "Cargo Aircraft Only."
- They may NOT have a charge of more than 30% of their rated capacity when shipped without prior approval from the correct authorized agency.
- Shippers of batteries that fall under ICAO Section II provisions (including UN3480 and UN3090 lithium metal batteries) may only ship a single Section II package in a single consignment or per overpack.

These new guidelines only cover the shipment of lithium ion and metal batteries as cargo and do not apply to batteries used in equipment.
