LONDON, ENGLAND, June 12, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Over the past few years the UK has suffered dramatically from a plague of sinkholes. For example, a 35ft hole that opened up across a residential street in Hemel Hempstead resulting in homes being evacuated.
Only last month was a family car almost swallowed by a large sinkhole that was estimated to be at least 30ft in length. It burst open on a quiet residential street in London after 24 hours of torrential rain.
"A sinkhole is essentially a hole in the ground that is formed by erosion and the drainage of water," explains Fraser Ruthven, Head of Marketing and Growth at London Drainage.
"As we have seen in the past, sinkholes can vary in size - some can even swallow up whole homes and buildings. Although they are often formed as a result of natural processes, human activity can sometimes be to blame."
Sinkholes are often categorised into two types: a cover-subsidence sinkhole is created over time, while cover-collapse sinkholes appear suddenly. They are often formed in areas of land where soluble bedrock can be dissolved by water, also known as 'karst terrain'.
