Dr. Sheypuk holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology (2009) from The New School for Social Research. She has clinical experience treating a wide variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression and other mood disorders, substance abuse problems, traumatic experiences, matters of grief/death/dying and self-esteem improvement. Dr. Sheypuk specializes in the psychology of dating, relationships, intimacy and sexuality, particularly among people with disabilities. To view a video of her recent TEDx Talk, click here.
Dr. Sheypuk has been at the forefront of new methodologies since launching a Skype-based therapy practice, with the intention of making it more convenient to attend therapy sessions, specifically for people with disabilities. Telepsychology has since taken a strong hold in the profession. Simultaneously, Dr. Sheypuk took the title of Ms. Wheelchair New York 2012 and strategically paired it with her Ph.D. to become a powerful critic of the established fashion, beauty and online dating industries. Dr. Sheypuk has faulted these commercial institutions, along with the mass media, for having shunned mega-billion dollar markets represented by people with disabilities.
She then gained international fame as a groundbreaking runway model during New York Fashion Week in February 2014, deemed by some as a "Rosa Parks moment" on behalf of women with disabilities.
"People with physical disabilities are largely left out of the dating and relationships picture," said Sheypuk. "It's not that people with disabilities are not sexy," she concluded. "It's that they have not been told that they are - yet."
More recently, Dr. Sheypuk has partnered with Women's eNews to form Girl Fuse, a project sponsored by NBCUniversal that gives teen girls with disabilities an editorial voice. Dr. Sheypuk has been published numerous times, in both mainstream media and publications specifically for people with disabilities, and is an expert commentator for SheKnows.com. Further adding to her extensive resume, she holds a Clinical Directorship at a NY State outpatient psychiatric clinic for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness.
She has held both teaching and research fellowships in psychology at The New School and has been trained in both psychodynamic psychotherapies and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Dr. Sheypuk lectures across the United States and serves as a panelist and board member for many events and organizations in the New York-metropolitan area.
