"It's interesting to watch the populations and the technology adoption curves rise around the world, but we have to recalibrate each year to take into account the ramifications of exogenous events"
SANTA CRUZ, CA, July 12, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The worldwide developer population will reach 25 million by 2021 according to Evans Data's recently released Global Developer Population and Demographics Report. The study, which is now in it's 20th edition, estimates not only current software developer populations across four major regions and forty different countries, but also overlays global primary research onto the population numbers to show numbers of developer forecast to adopt various technologies now and in the future.
For example, the number of developers currently creating mobile applications is estimated at 11.9M, while the number of developers who target Android first is 5.9M vs the 2.8M that target iOS as a first platform. Most developers target multiple mobile platforms, so secondary platform targets differ and often include competing platforms. When we look at initial target by region, 2.2M developers target Android first in the APAC region vs just over 500K for iOS, but in North America the order is reversed, with iOS targeted first by more than 200K developers over those targeting Android first.
"It's interesting to watch the populations and the technology adoption curves rise around the world, but we have to recalibrate each year to take into account the ramifications of exogenous events," said Janel Garvin CEO of Evans Data. "For example, in our latest estimates from our spring secondary research, the model has predicted that growth of the developer population in the UK will be higher than in Germany and that the two developer populations will reach parity by 2021. However, UK's recent decision regarding the EU could change that. That's the sort of thing we will have to look into for the next forecast."
For the general developer population, estimates and projections for growth to 2021 show APAC growing faster than other regions. Growth in India and China are predicted to keep APAC's developer population the highest globally for the next several years.
The Global Developer Population and Demographics Study is published twice a year and contains developer population estimates by country and region as well as population numbers for developers adopting various technologies.
