Weiss, Registered Nurse for Katz Women's Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center (Part of Northwell Health) has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Melanie S. Weiss will be featured in an upcoming edition of Top 10 in Health and Wellness in 2016.
Melanie S. Weiss began her career as a Registered Nurse in June 1985 after the completion of her BSN at Adelphi University. Completing her final obstetric clinical at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC), which is now MAGNET recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence, she was soon offered a nursing position on their Postpartum Unit. Still employed with LIJMC today, Weiss worked her way up to the title of Assistant Nursing Care Coordinator.
"Patients have always been my inspiration," Weiss said. "But it's been my maturity and experience in the field that has propelled my career forward. Each year, I develop a greater sense of empathy for my patients, and that makes me a better person and a better nurse."
Today, Weiss cares for new mothers and their infants on the Mother/Baby Unit at the Katz Women's Hospital (KWH), which is part of Northwell Health. Working in a unit comprised of 30 beds and a well nursery, her nights are very busy. Weiss also maintains Clinical Ladder III status and serves as a mentor and resource person to nurses and ancillary staff members. Additionally, she is Co-Chair of the hospital's Clinical Ladder Peer Review Board, has Charge Nurse responsibilities, serves as Blood Captain, and initiated and maintains her unit's Journal Club. She's also the annual Team Captain of the Northwell Health Walk.
Weiss is certified in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing, Maternal Newborn Nursing, Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation, and Professional Childbirth Education (Lamaze), and is a Certified Nurse AMMA Therapist. She also holds a certificate in wholistic nursing. Weiss is a member of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, International Nurses Association, National Association of Distinguished Professionals, National Association of Professional Women, Immune Deficiency Foundation, PANDAS Network, and New England PANS/PANDAS Association, and is a Board Member, Social Event Coordinator, and Membership Liaison for Long Island Authors and Writers Society.
Authoring her first children's medical book, 'In A Pickle Over PANDAS', in May 2015, Weiss also published an article, 'PANDAS: What Every Parent Needs to Know', in the November 2015 issue of 'The Missouri Autism Report'. Another one of her articles, 'The Pandemonium of PANDAS: An Unprecedented Pediatric Disorder', was accepted for publication by 'Nurse Advisor Magazine' in 2015.
Weiss earned the Nurse Professionalism Award from LIJ at Northwell Health during Nurses Week in May 2016. Her book also earned numerous accolades, including a 2016 Bronze Award from eLit Electronic Book Awards in the health/medicine/nutrition category, a 2016 Finalist spot from Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the children's/juvenile non-fiction category, and a 2016 Finalist spot for the 10th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards in the medical category. She also earned a 2016 Readers' Favorite Award for five-star reviews. Weiss plans to begin an MSN degree in Nursing Administration at Adelphi University this fall.
