New Book Tells What's Wrong with American Healthcare

A USC professor who became a hospital CEO at age 32, Luke is considered a thought leader and futurist on the shift in healthcare from fee-for-service to value-based care. "In the fee-for-service era, doctors learned quickly that the financial fruits of over-admitting and over-utilizing (extending patient's length of stay in facilities) were plentiful. This led to what has turned into a broken system," he explains in Ex-Acute.

Today, under the Affordable Care Act, healthcare providers are paid not based on the number of patients in beds or procedures performed, but instead on the value of the care they provide. This has forced a change to managed care that will continue no matter who wins the election, he says.
