Custom Code Problems are Primary Issue with Cloud App Performance

    SANTA CRUZ, CA, July 28, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Despite speculation that network latency or the nature or performance of virtual machines are the biggest drag on Cloud application performance, Evans Data's recently released Cloud Development Survey shows that developers actually working on Cloud applications believe that the main performance bottleneck in their Cloud apps is the inherent application performance that is related to custom code in their applications. The survey of over 500 developers actively developing in or deploying to the Cloud showed that 35% cited application performance related to custom code as the biggest bottleneck, while 24% cited server performance, 20% cited app performance related to frameworks, and 12% cited network latency. Only 5% thought virtual machines were to blame.

Despite the realization that application performance is critical to Cloud performance, only 43% of the developers parallelize the code in their applications and only 46% said they created their applications to be "Cloud aware". When asked where they have found the most assistance in parallelizing their code for the Cloud, the majority of those who do parallelize their code said their Cloud service provider was the most helpful.

"Developers are realizing that they the ones that control the performance of their apps in the Cloud and that it's not something they can blame on the service provider or its data center," said Janel Garvin CEO of Evans Data. "Instead they're looking to their service providers for assistance in parallelizing their code for optimum performance."
