Dr. Susan Ann Dimock Recognized by Worldwide Branding For Excellence in Government Ethics

    INNISFIL, ON, August 01, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Susan Ann Dimock, University Professor and Professor of Philosophy at York University, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in public ethics, political and legal philosophy, and university education.

Coming from humble working class roots, Susan and her sister Barbara were the first members of their family to go to university, and when she went, she fell in love. She relished the opportunities that university afforded, learning anything and everything that her professors and peers could teach her; research and writing were joys; she even liked sitting for exams. In the future, Dr. Dimock knew there was nothing she would rather do than be a researcher and author, educator and mentor. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick, she went on to complete a Master of Arts from York University, and graduated with a Ph.D. in philosophy from Dalhousie University. In 1991 she began her full-time career as an assistant professor at York University. Having just celebrated her 25th anniversary at York, she now holds two of the highest ranks available: Professor and University Professor in the department of philosophy.

Dr. Dimock has honed her expertise in moral, political and legal philosophy, and applies that expertise to a range of important public issues (working with colleagues in the School of Public Policy and Administration at York and elsewhere, as well as philosophical colleagues from around the world). She works with public service organizations like the Ontario Public Service, the Integrity Commissioner of Ontario, the Public Sector Integrity Commissioner of the Canadian government, as well as provincial organizations like the Office of the Inspector General of Montreal. Her goal in such activities is to enable, enhance and support ethical decision making by those who work in government; she brings her moral, political and legal expertise to the broad domain of public sector ethics and good governance as central components of her life as a public intellectual. Dr. Dimock combines her unique specializations in meta-ethics and normative theory, applied ethics, political philosophy and public policy, philosophy of law, public administrative law and criminal law to advance both the academic study of these subjects as a researcher and published author and to enhance the practice of ethics across a variety of government activities and actors. She brings those same skills to her many contributions to university governance, contributions that have included serving as the Chair of York University's Senate, Chair of Faculty Council, Master of McLaughlin College, Director of the York Centre for Practical Ethics, and President of the York University Faculty Association; it is in recognition of her countless contributions to collegial governance that she is the youngest person to have been awarded the honorific title of University Professor in York's history. Bringing that same energy and commitment, and combination of theory and practice, to her teaching, Dr. Dimock is also recognized as an exemplary educator and mentor; the excellence of her teaching, in both undergraduate classes and graduate courses and supervisions, has been recognized by bestowal upon her of the President's University Wide Teaching Award (York's highest teaching honour). Her teaching influence extends far beyond her own classes and even York, though, as she is the author or editor of numerous textbooks and other pedagogical materials used in universities throughout North America. Needless to say, she is sought after by students in many fields, and is a member of the graduate programs in philosophy, socio-legal studies, public policy, administration and law at York University. Finally, Dr. Dimock also contributes to her academic disciplines through the creation and dissemination of original research and scholarship, presenting her own work at conferences and workshops around the world, and publishing it in a wide range of academic journals and presses. She also supports the academic activities of colleagues from around the world by serving as the editor-in-chief or associate editor on a number of scholarly journals, and editing collections of essays published by familiar book presses. She serves as the editor-in-chief for "Dialogue: The Canadian Philosophical Review," and as an associate editor for "Criminal Law and Philosophy." She is also the associate editor in charge of special editions for "Journal of Value Inquiry."

In her spare time, Dr. Dimock enjoys spending time with her partner at their cottage on Golden Lake in Ontario, or tending to her large vegetable garden and cooking homemade food. (Her soups are legendary.) She is also a lover of big dogs, with a special affection for Bullmastiffs. (She has owned four of these gentle giants, all of whom outweighed her, over the years.) And she is the mother of one fabulous daughter, with whom she is very close and of whom she is immensely proud.

Dr. Dimock knows that much of her career success must be attributed to her own passion and hard work. But she also insists on acknowledging the help she received along the way from others. Her mother made her believe she would attend university, 'of course', despite the fact that no one in the family ever had. And she benefitted from some very generous mentors who shared their time, and inspired her to grow and challenge herself. She also acknowledges the support she received throughout her university studies from many individual Canadians (some known, but many choosing to remain anonymous) who gave some of their hard-earned money to support academic prizes, bursaries and scholarships for students (at UNBSJ, York and Dalhousie); without the financial support she received from such sources, it is very unlikely that she could have pursued a university education at all, let alone to the highest level of earning a PhD. She is very grateful for that support, and is committed to 'paying it forward' now that she is in so privileged a position. Looking ahead, Dr. Dimock hopes to establish a new platform from which further research on good government can be pursued and government ethics promoted. She hopes to deepen her ties with individuals and agencies working in the public sector so as to forge even more meaningful collaboration between the university and government and civil society partners.
