KILLEEN, TX, August 24, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Levona "Lee" Rose Hunter, Professional Assessment Scorer for Pearson and Former English as a Second Language Teacher and Academic Adviser for Killeen Independent School District, has been recognized with an Excellence Award as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Levona "Lee" Rose Hunter will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016/2017.
Forty-three years after doing a favor for a friend by substitute teaching a special needs elementary class, Levona "Lee" Rose Hunter, who was just a 17-year-old high school graduate at the time, has never left the classroom after all these years. After that initial subbing experience, she later spent many more hours working in the same capacity while working toward her degree. Earning her BA in English at Harding University in 1976, followed by her MA in English at Arkansas State University in 1982, Hunter has enjoyed a very rewarding experience in education.
Most recently, Hunter was employed with Killeen Independent School District as a Second Language Teacher and an Academic Adviser for an 800-student middle school serving grades 6-8. She began working for the district in 1988, until recently retiring in 2014. She taught ELL, English, Remedial Reading, General History, Texas History, and US History at the secondary level to classes that averaged anywhere from 25-30 students per class. In April 2015, Hunter began working for Pearson as a Professional Assessment Scorer, reading and scoring standardized assessments in response to subject-related, open-ended questions according to a customer supplied scoring guide.
"Growing up poor, I lived in the inner city of Detroit as a kid," Hunter said. "School was magical to me growing up; it was one of the only places where I truly felt safe and it was the teachers that made it so. I think, for me, becoming a teacher later on in life had something to do with paying it forward. And even though I am no longer teaching in the classroom setting, I believe that my work at Pearson is equally as important."
As a Professional Assessment Scorer at Pearson, Hunter scores the Language Arts portion of the PARRC exam. The PARCC exam identifies where a student needs remediation and/or enrichment so that instruction can be tailored to meet individual student needs.
In addition to earning her BA and MA, Hunter completed coursework for her Certificate in English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) in 1990. She is a published poet, with her poems having appeared in several print and online literary publications and anthologies. She also has a poetry chapter book in the making. She loves to write and especially loves the creative process, much of which has been utilized over the years in the classroom as a teacher. Most recently, she began the process of forming her own online business as well, called Rosalie's Attic, which will feature hand-pieced baby quilts and quilted wall hangings.
