About Jeanne Elinor Karison:

Dr. Karison received her M.Ed. at the University of Virginia. She started her career in education as an elementary school teacher. After moving to Indiana, Dr. Karison became the Director of the Teacher-Friend Program and, later, for part of a year, she was the principal of the local high school. Another move was in store when she moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where she was the Director of the Drug Education Program. She joined the attorney general at a conference of Alabama school superintendents where she addressed the issue of drugs in the schools and how to deal with the issue. Eventually, she moved into a position as the administration curriculum coordinator for a middle school. She completed her Ph.D. while teaching full time at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Upon receipt of her degree, she taught at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama where she was also Coordinator of the Early Childhood Program. Her professional career and background has always been working in the field of education. Dr. Karison is on the faculty of Roanoke-Chowan Community College where she works in the English Department. She teaches Developmental Reading and Writing classes to students who are not ready to read and write at the college level. As an educator, she feels that her greatest challenge is ensuring that the learning activities for her students are relevant for all.

Dr. Karison prepared for her career by completing her college education and presenting her dissertation to earn a Ph.D. in her field. She believes that her greatest strengths are exemplified in the classroom, teaching and connecting with students to stimulate a thirst for learning. Her greatest accomplishment is raising two wonderful daughters who are both in the field of Education. Elaine Allison Lesgold is the coordinator of a tutoring program at a university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Martha Leigh Thomas is an administrator at a university in Tupelo, Mississippi. Mrs. Thomas just gave birth to Dr, Karison's first grandchild, a granddaughter, at the end of July.
