Alabama Cataract Eye Surgeon Brings Symfony Lens Implant to Birmingham

Birmingham Cataract & Refractive Surgeon Marc Michelson, M.D. comments that the Food and Drug Administration approval of the TECNIS Symfony Extended Range of Vision Lens Implant is a "game-changer for people with cataracts."

BIRMINGHAM, AL, September 08, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On July 15, 2016 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the TECNIS Symfony Extended Range of Vision Lens Implant which is the first intraocular lens (IOL) that provides cataract patients with an extended depth-of-focus following cataract surgery. "The TECNIS Symfony intraocular lens also is the first lens implant introduced in the U.S market that can simultaneously correct presbyopia as well as astigmatism. Now more people desiring extended depth of focus vision following cataract surgery, not wanting to wear reading glasses, and who also have astigmatism have this incredible option," said Dr. Michelson. "As a Refractive Cataract Surgeon my job is to identify and apply the best innovations and advances in cataract surgery and lens implants to help patients achieve their best vision possible. When discussing cataract surgery with patients, most people would prefer to have an extended range of 'clear' vision. This means that after cataract surgery many more patients will be able go about their daily activities without having to reach for or wear glasses than before. In other words, more patients will have the ability to see comfortably at distance, arm's length, and for near without being dependent on any eyeglasses," explained Dr. Michelson.

"As a Cataract Surgeon, a Corneal Specialist and Refractive Surgeon, I realize the importance of precise measurements, calculations and meticulous surgery to get the best possible results for my patients. We have been using advanced design lens implants for many years to correct vision as a part of the cataract surgery procedure. We are excited to introduce the TECNIS Symfony Lens Implant combined with the advanced Laser Cataract Surgery to obtain the most precise results for our patients," further explained Dr. Michelson. "Many patients with decreased vision who need cataract surgery are referred to us not only from the surrounding Birmingham professional eye care community but also from across Alabama. These patients, as well as those we provide consultation for with complex vision correction needs, stand to benefit from this type of lens implant. We are quite excited."

According to data from Prevent Blindness America the overall national prevalence of cataracts is 17% of the U.S. population 40 and older, indicating that more than 24 million older Americans have cataracts. Alabama has a population of approximately 2,250,000 people over 40 years old. This equates to about 387,000 people in Alabama with cataracts. When the cataract impairs vision or safe mobility, eye surgeons are able to remove the cloudy crystalline lens where the cataract forms with proven surgical techniques and then implant a permanent replacement lens to correct the vision. The TECNIS Symfony offers new options for many patients who up until now could not obtain extended depth of focus without glasses following cataract surgery.
