"Our mission has a real and visible impact. We save lives via bone marrow matches. Finding over 3,000 matches to date was what motivated these political leaders and their staffs to get swabbed."
DENVER, CO, September 13, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mike Peters, three-time cancer survivor and lead singer of the Welsh rock band The Alarm, achieved a rare feat on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, September 6th. With partisan rancor at an all-time high and election fervor in overdrive, Peters united Republicans and Democrats alike for the common good and a greater cause.
Peters, co-founder of the Love Hope Strength Foundation (LHSF) and the subject of the soon to be released documentary, Man in The Camo Jacket, struck the right chord via the enthusiasm that politicians of all stripes share for rock and roll music. Peters and Love Hope Strength, the world's leading music-centric cancer charity, hosted a "Get On the List" event at the Capitol Building.
The event included a lifesaving bone marrow donor registration program run by LHSF together with DKMS - We Delete Blood Cancer. U.S. Congressmen and women, their staffs, and other government employees all became potential life-savers via Capitol Hill's first ever cheek swab donor drive. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy was an Honorary Co-Host for the event alongside House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer.
As Peters added, "I am thrilled and honored to connect with leaders of both political parties on an issue as important as blood cancer. The feedback we received and the inroads we made gets us ever closer to realizing the goal of a Cancer Moonshot sooner than we ever imagined."
Political leaders and their staffs were struck by the immediacy and impact of Love Hope Strength's efforts. Peters continued, "Our mission has a real and visible impact. We save lives via bone marrow matches. Finding over 3,000 matches to date was what motivated these political leaders and their staffs to get swabbed."
Upon the completion of his Capitol event, Peters embarked on a 20-city tour with his band, The Alarm. In addition, Peters and his team are readying the premiere of a documentary eight years in the making, Man in the Camo Jacket.
The documentary spotlights Welsh rock musician (Mike Peters), his battle with cancer, his climb back, and his journey to enlist the world's top musicians to save cancer patients around the globe. (And the realization that the life he saves may in fact, be his own.) Each film screening will feature an accompanying bone marrow drive leading to thousands of new donors and the potential of thousands of lives saved.
Peters' ongoing commitment to defeat cancer (while he's currently battling the disease) has attracted international attention. As the 2016 World Cancer Congress convenes in Paris, October 31st - November 3rd, 2016, Peters will make his second appearance as a keynote speaker and performer. At his side will be a guitar signed by all the political leaders who participated at the event on Capitol Hill.
For Mike Peters, the journey has taken him to basecamp of Mt. Everest to music events around the world to the corridors of power in both the US and the UK. Bottom line: he won't stop until everyone has the same opportunity he's had to defeat cancer.
