SAN FRANCISCO, CA, September 19, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- SCARLET MINOR AND THE RENEGADE
In Andam's debut installment of a new adventure series, a young man finds himself in danger from a band of murderous pirates looking to break themselves free of a curse. Scarlet Rosendale is primed to someday run the family inn--the Seafarers Nook in Buccaneers Bay--but he dreams of being a pirate like his great-grandfather Capt. Eyesinwealth. Scarlet's ecstatic to finally receive, on his 17th birthday, Eyesinwealth's scrolls, which contain his journal entries. The stories tell of a longtime curse, ultimately passed down to Scarlet, that befell the captain and the crew of his ship, the Admiral Bonior, later named the Renegade. But Scarlet's situation is even more dire than it initially appears: former Renegade crew member Strongy arrives to tell him that the ship and its new captain may be coming after the teenager. It seems that the crew members believe they can lift the curse--they'll just need Scarlet's blood.
This novel presents a story about storytelling, told from multiple perspectives: Scarlet's first-person narrative, Eyesinwealth's journals, and Strongy's accounts aboard the Renegade. Andam handles it all wonderfully and clearly, even when the story becomes nonlinear; for example, Strongy tells of Ambioca's mutiny against Eyesinwealth but later drops a pre-mutiny tale. There are a few odd phrases here and there, such as a "deity-looking Princess" and a man who carries a hangman's noose "for an emergency suicide."
Parts of the novel feel more like hints of things to come; at the beginning, for instance, Scarlet (the narrator) says that he'll eventually be the Renegade's captain, but he hasn't set foot on the ship by the novel's end. His apparent name change in the book's title also goes unexplained. However, Andam fills the pages with intense sequences, as when Scarlet and family flee pirates with clearly homicidal intentions. There's also a surprisingly detailed and engrossing origin of the curse, as well as a lead villain who more than earns his moniker of Stonecold Ambioca. An opening volume with enough action and titillation to get readers invested in a much longer tale.
