IRVINE, CA, September 26, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kirkus review's completion of their assessment of the second book in the Scarlet Minor Chronicles takes readers on a wild and exciting oceanic journey, and battles that earned the book a must read recommendation. In the second of Andam's (Scarlet Minor and the Renegade, 2015, etc.) adventure series, young Scarlet searches for a way to free himself of a curse while evading a murderous pirate captain. It's Scarlet Rosendale's destiny to bear the Curse of Bodiaka, passed down to him by his pirate great-grandfather. But the curse has likewise affected nefarious Capt. Stonecold Ambioca and his crew of the Renegade, now a part of the Living Undead. Ambioca relentlessly pursues Scarlet, convinced that his blood can rid the captain, et al., of the curse.
Scarlet, meanwhile, journeys by sea to the Twin Pikes of Nebo to find the key to ending the curse. He and pals Skimpy and Strongy, the latter formerly of Ambioca's crew, brave storms, sea creatures, and pirates trying to reach their destination. Picking up right where the series opener left off, the follow-up tale is definitely an improvement, with an animated story set almost entirely at sea. Andam spotlights a number of oceanic beasts whose simple descriptions speak volumes. The Krillons, for example, are "giant piranha" that tear apart a ship, while a "dragon-like creature" attacks Scarlet. The suspense climbs as dangers surround the protagonist: monsters from the sea, other vessels launching assaults, and there's always a threat of mutiny. Readers see Scarlet come into his own here. He gets an apprenticeship with Capt. Mady the Kid, who teaches him both crew-leading and sword-fighting skills. Andam develops his characters admirably; pirates, for instance, aren't all bad, particularly the tough but levelheaded Strongy and Capt. Mady, Scarlet's warmhearted mentor. Then again, villainous Ambioca expresses his outrage by tossing one of his crew overboard.
The story breezes past Scarlet's newfound connection to Princess Araya for a disappointingly short romance. But it at least sets up the possibility for the couple's relationship to flourish in the next book. An energized sophomore effort with Capt. Scarlet Minor is more worthy--and more seaworthy--than the first.
Since the release of the review on the second book, the author has become energized to work on the fourth book in the five book series and is very enthusiastic about the future direction of the character Scarlet Minor.
