QUINCY, MA, September 22, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- News has emerged in recent weeks stating that Section 136 of the Massachusetts state legislature Bill H.4569, has proposed the exploration of switching time zones, moving from Eastern Standard Time to Atlantic Standard Time, meaning Massachusetts would be one hour ahead of the rest of the East Coast, for four months, starting in the middle of November.

Signed by Gov. Charlie Baker (R), the Bill creates a legislative commission to study the proposal of a time zone change. If the change to Atlantic Standard Time did go ahead, it would give residents of Massachusetts a sunlight happy hour, even in the depths of winter. While it may seem unusual, it's not untried, with parts of Canada and some Caribbean islands making the change to prolong daylight during winter.
Most interesting to Executive Marketing Media is the potential social and financial benefits. It is commonly acknowledged that crime drops during daylight hours and somewhat unusually, so do heart attack rates. People are more productive when the sun is shining. According to a 2012 report in the Journal of Applied Psychology, during daylight saving time workers are less productive as they are more likely to spend time surfing the web. This means daily tasks take longer than usual to complete and productivity falls. The financial implications of the "spring forward" in March, according to SleepBetter's Lost-House Economic Index, costs the U.S. approximately $1.65 per person, with Boston suffering a $1.68 cost per capita.
Not everyone is convinced by the proposal, however, with Gov. Baker believing that a shift in time zones would cause all sorts of issues around commuting and work schedules among a host of other things. State Senator John F. Keenan stated: "I don't know what the impact will be for Massachusetts in the financial markets where we'd be on Atlantic and the rest of the East Coast would be on Eastern time." CEO at Executive Marketing Media, Media Talesh states, "There are always pros and cons to anything and it's just a case of deciding whether there are more positives or negatives to the proposed time zone change."
