Vancouver Plastic Surgeon Offers New IDEAL Breast Implants

    LANGLEY, BC, October 04, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Plastic surgeon Dr. Mathew Mosher now offers breast augmentation patients at his Vancouver-area practice IDEAL structured breast implants -- innovative saline implants that provide the natural feel of a cohesive silicone gel implant without the risk of a "silent rupture."

The IDEAL IMPLANT's unique internal structure consists of 2 saline-filled chambers separated by 1 to 3 shells nested together. These baffle shells control the movement of the saline filler, so it doesn't slosh as can happen in other saline implants. Other saline implants are similar to water balloons with an outer shell filled with fluid. They feel less like natural breast tissue than cohesive silicone gel and are prone to visible rippling and wrinkling.

"Cohesive silicone gel breast implants are very popular at my metro Vancouver practice because they feel and move so much like natural breasts," Dr. Mosher says. "What creates that natural feel and movement is the cohesive gel, which is designed to stay together even if the implant shell cracks or ruptures -- what is sometimes called a silent rupture."

A cohesive silicone gel implant that has ruptured may not be easily detected. Imaging of the breast implant is necessary with the most sensitive imaging being an MRI test. In British Columbia, an elective MRI of the breast may not be covered by health insurance in the majority of younger women. Women who are uncomfortable with the possibility of having a silent rupture, but aren't happy with the limitations of traditional saline filled devices, now have the option of choosing the IDEAL IMPLANT.

Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the IDEAL IMPLANT in 2014 based on clinical studies that began in 2009. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure in North America. The percentage of patients choosing silicone gel implants continues to increase each year. In Canada, the vast majority of breast augmentations are being done with cohesive silicone gel filled devices. When these implants rupture there does not appear to be any health consequences. However, it is very difficult to assess the implant integrity on clinical examination. For some patients, knowing immediately when their implant has ruptured is very important to them. The introduction of the IDEAL IMPLANT may change trend back to the use of saline filled devices.
