"Shatterproof" Cancer Survivor, Dr. Tonya M. Lyons, Is Available to Speak

    NEW YORK, NY, September 29, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Tonya M. Lyons is President and CEO of New Image Family Dentistry in Memphis, Tenn. She is also Co-Founder of Rock Church Memphis and currently serves on the pastoral team.

A breast-cancer survivor, motivational speaker and life coach, Dr. Lyons will be available for media appearances and to speak during the month of October, which has been designated "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month."

Lyons, who is a native of Cairo, Ill., has been practicing dentistry in Memphis for the past 22 years, after graduating from Jackson State University. She learned she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2009. Like many women, she discovered a lump on her breast while in the shower one morning, which prompted her to schedule a visit with her physician.

"They were like, 'Come back in two weeks for your biopsy,'" Lyons said in an interview. "The radiologist knew what he was looking at when he asked me did anyone drive with me to have the mammogram. Being a health professional, I knew that he knew it was cancer. It was a tremendous amount of fear. When you hear the word cancer, you automatically think that you're going to die. I called one of my distant cousins ... who is an 11-year survivor, and she told me to relax, breathe, and that it's not a death sentence."

The ordeal with cancer was accompanied by a number of concurrent misfortunes, including a divorce from her pastor husband and a split in the congregation they had co-founded. It was a potentially crushing life crisis that Dr. Lyons surmounted through faith in God and her own indomitable spirit. Dr. Lyons is currently at work on an inspirational memoir based on her personal tragedies and triumphs, titled SHATTERPROOF. It is due to be published in the US in March 2017.

Dr. Lyons is President and CEO of New Image Family Dentistry. She is Co-Founder of Rock Church Memphis and currently serves on the pastoral team. She is the parent of two beautiful children, Kelli and Judah.

Dr. Lyons is a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She is also the 2011 recipient of the Loretta McNary Show Mother of the Year award and a 2012 recipient of the Kindle award for community service. In 2013 she appeared on the Bev Johnson show sharing her Breast Cancer Survivor story. She also received the 2014 Church Girls Rock Survivor Award.

Dr. Lyons serves on various community organization boards. She was most recently recognized for merging ministry and dentistry through the Rock Your Smile Outreach program with Pastor Donald Walker, Jr. This program was designed to provide access to dental care for the under-served and under-privileged population in Memphis.

She is the author of the book SHATTERPROOF, due out in March 2017.
