MIAMI, FL, October 13, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With more and more middle-aged Americans finding themselves part of the "sandwich generation," caring for elderly or disabled parents while also raising young kids or teens, bringing in hospice care for a parent who is dealing with a terminal illness has become a reality for many. Although hospice care is covered by Medicare for those over age 65 and often by state Medicaid programs for lower-income patients as well, filling out all the required documents and organizing co-payments while juggling other responsibilities can be overwhelming. Some may mistakenly assume hospice care is only available for those with cancer rather than anyone with a terminal illness. Many may also be unaware of the wide spectrum of benefits hospice can provide, from respite care for spouses or family caregivers to counseling and other emotional support for the patient and family.
"Informed" is an HD-filmed short produced for public television stations and that airs on many PBS Member Stations. Host Rob Lowe opens the piece that discusses some of the common misconceptions about hospice care and outlines the ways in which it is different from other types of medical treatment. Viewers should come away with a better idea of the benefits and potential drawbacks of hospice care.
