A Reality Check for the Cloud?

    LONDON, ENGLAND, November 16, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A global survey on software usage in Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) revealed that, against the rapid rise of cloud technologies, 79% of respondents still prefer the desktop version of a program.

Last week, London-based enhanced remote access provider MyQuickCloud carried out a global survey to over 4,000 small business owners around the world, to discover their business software use and preferences.

Over the past decade, there have been many predictions of the end of the desktop computer and associated applications but the results from this survey show that the PC is still the primary way to access applications and that desktop installed applications are still the main choice of SME business.

While cloud adoption is strong and growing within the SME sector, desktop installed software is still the preferred way to access business applications.

98% of respondents said they use some desktop installed applications and over 1/3 of respondents saying they only use desktop installed applications.

The reasons for the reluctance to move to cloud-based software were given as less functionality in integrations with third party applications (54%), lack of trust of the cloud-based versions (42%) and ownership/sovereignty of data (36%). Remote access was the primary driver for people adopting on-line versions of software (82%).

"Small business users want some of the benefits of the cloud, such as remote access, but they do not recognize the other benefits that are often more relevant to larger organizations. If software companies fail to understand that many of their users' preference is to still use locally installed programs, then much of their product development efforts may be wasted. And unless software companies offer cloud-like functionality to both new and existing customers they will in no doubt lose out," said Talal Choucair, CEO, MyQuickCloud.
