One Leg Physio Tips Global Balance

The average person can balance on one leg for 33.4 seconds. How about you?

Balance is an essential component of human movement, so that we may walk, step and run with efficiency and grace.

PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, November 17, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Poor balance increases the risk of an injurious fall, longer hospital stay and poorer rehabilitation outcome. So on Monday 21 November 2016 physiotherapists and physical therapists (physio) worldwide are launching an innovative Global campaign for better balance.

The 'One Leg Physio' campaign invites people to test their single leg balance skill and compare their performance with age-adjusted averages - 33.4 seconds for all adults.

Campaign director and Australian physiotherapist, Glenn Ruscoe, said, "Balance is an essential component of human movement, so that we may walk, step and run with efficiency and grace. The campaign provides the tools to improve balance so people can physically perform better and be safer at their work, sport and leisure."

Participants are encouraged to submit their best one leg balance time to a global survey available at www.oneleg.physio - note the clever domain name extension. The organisers are expecting to collect enough data to produce the largest ever research project.

For those who submit their best one leg balance time, personalised 'physio' feedback and tips are provided based on their age and results, including the challenging Difficult Dozen.

Ruscoe said, "The Difficult Dozen are twelve progressively difficult exercises that challenge the proprioceptive, visual, vestibular, nervous and musculoskeletal systems that work together to maintain our balance. Participants will need to work harder through each of the four levels and completing them is a significant accomplishment. The exercises are a fun and stimulating form of training that not only improve balance, but also strength, flexibility and agility."

The One Leg Physio campaign seeks to produce friendly rivalry between friends, family, workplaces and even nations to improve their balance skills and outdo each other. Challenges to do better are expected to sweep around the world across social media, perhaps culminating in the setting of a new world record of single leg standing of 76 hours and 40 minutes currently held by Suresh Joachim of Sri Lanka, on 22 - 25 May 1997.

Help improve global balance by taking the balance test at www.oneleg.physio and following @onelegphysio on social media.
