These new lenses work to absorb the blue light.
SCRANTON, PA, December 13, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Northeastern Pennsylvania's Happenings Magazine last month featured Dr. Arthur J. Jordan in its Medical Profile section. Dr. Jordan answered a variety of questions about his life in the NEPA region and his experience as an optometrist and one of the founders of Northeastern Eye Institute (NEI). He also shared his greatest accomplishments.
In addition to a lifetime of advocating optimal vision comfort for school children through practices like reintroducing slanted desks to schools, Dr. Jordan said that he is proud to have "pioneered special lenses for absorption of blue light" from digital devices.
"The blue light from the screens of computers and cell phones is one thing that can cause macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the U.S.," he told Happenings Magazine (see the Medical Profile on Pages 140-141). "These new lenses work to absorb the blue light."
The screens of personal computers, smartphones, tablets and other devices project short-wavelength blue light. According to All About Vision, not only can blue light from these sources result in "digital eye strain," but the radiation can "damage light-sensitive cells in the retina" and increase the risk of macular degeneration.
Macular degeneration damages retinal cells in the center of the eye, leading to loss of central vision. Though it often occurs with age - the condition is usually referred to as age-related macular degeneration, or AMD - factors such as family history and smoking are also risk factors.
Millions of Americans have jobs where they use a computer for eight hours or more each day. Many millions more spend their leisure time in front of a computer or looking at a mobile device. With digital technology becoming a staple of daily life, the potential for eye health issues related to computer use - such as macular degeneration - is only going to increase.
Dr. Jordan drew upon years of experience to develop special lenses that absorb the blue light emitted by digital screens, reducing eye strain and minimizing harm to the eye. He personally equipped several team members at NEI with blue light-blocking frames for computer usage, including his own son Dr. Arthur J. Jordan Jr.
