PHOENIX, AZ, January 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jennifer Karmely, a Las Vegas based child psychologist, has written a children's picture book, The Day the Grownups Went Away, as a tool for parents and educators to open a dialogue with children as to why they need supervision and grownups to help them with navigating the highs and lows and the joys and travesties of daily life. The author is set to launch a series of videos in February to provide tips and pointers to parents and educators in beginning a conversation with children as to why they are important in a child's life.
Dr. Jennifer Karmely, who obtained her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and who has worked in the Las Vegas metro area at various clinics in the areas of substance abuse and child therapy, conceived of the idea when she had a few patients/clients who had a difficult time dealing with authority. Dr. Karmely states, "All children have problems with authority at some point and some have more of a problem than others. Parents, guardians, and teachers need to have a way of starting a dialogue with these kids so that the kids understand why those in charge are important to their life." Children get tired of being told what to do. Dr. Karmely said, "Adults get tired of being told what to do, as well." Sometimes all of us need to understand why rules are important and how they keep us safe and functioning. The best way to do this with a child is to talk to them. The Day the Grownups Went Away is a great tool for helping children understand the need for authority, rules, and to learn to be more open to adults in their life. It is also a great tool for helping adults talk to children about why their rules and level of care keep them safe.
Dr. Karmely's book has been highly received by her colleagues and other psychology/ social work professionals.
Dr. Karmely, PhD, has spent her career wondering about how children think and how adults can better communicate with them. Due to brain development and maturation, children aren't just "mini adults". They are different beings altogether and understanding their perspective is critical for communicating with them. The Day the Grownups Went Away provides whimsical illustration and accessible language for a child to understand the adult perspective and provides useful language for communicating with adults. It provides the same to adults wanting to communicate with children.
At one point, Leo, the main protagonist, goes to school where there are no teachers or principals anywhere. The children are in their classroom destroying everything. At first, Leo is quite happy but then he realizes the mayhem is destroying his classroom and there is no one to teach him anything. Leo decides to be mature and start teaching math but the other students are less than receptive. When Leo goes home with his little sister and has to change her diaper and make her dinner he realizes that being an authority figure is hard work.
The book is illustrated by Tatiana Minina, a Russian born illustrator now living in Massachusetts who has illustrated several books over the years. To learn about Ms. Minina, go to: http://www.tatianaminina.com.

Dr. Jennifer Karmely's biography in The Day the Grownups Went Away is as follows:
"Dr. Jennifer Karmely is a child psychologist who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. You might have heard of Las Vegas. It's where grownups go do grownup stuff - like lose money and laugh a lot. Why are they laughing if they lose money? If you lose your lunch money, you don't laugh. Grownups are strange. Dr. Karmely also has two girls who love dolls, princesses, and just about anything pretty. Girls will be girls. Dr. Karmely also has a loving husband who helps take care of the girls. Dr. Karmely spent a lot of time in school. She loves school. She got a fancy title, 'doctor' (Dr.) and you can too but you have to be a grownup and study hard. Did we say she is super smart?"
