E-cigarettes are relatively new to the market, and it's safe to say that we're beginning to see some of the hidden dangers of this product.
ATLANTA, GA, January 13, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Attorneys at the law firm of Watkins, Lourie, Roll & Chance announced on Tuesday that they are currently reviewing cases of injury caused by exploding electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes. Popularly considered a "safe" alternative to smoking among tobacco users, e-cigarettes pose their own safety risks in the form of fires and explosions.
"E-cigarettes are relatively new to the market, and it's safe to say that we're beginning to see some of the hidden dangers of this product," said Robin Lourie, an attorney at Watkins, Lourie, Roll & Chance, PC. "As with any defective product, it's important for injured consumers to know that they have rights. An experienced product liability attorney can advocate on their behalf and potentially secure compensation for their injuries."
A comprehensive list prepared by eCig One found that more than 130 e-cigarette explosions have resulted in injury or death. The majority of explosions occurred when the e-cigarette was charging, while others happened during use (sometimes known as "vaping") or transportation.
The lithium-ion battery used in many e-cigarettes might also present a danger. Even when removed from the e-cigarette, the battery can become damaged or develop a short that could result in an explosion. For example, last summer a man in Haralson County, Georgia, suffered third-degree burns to his hand and leg when, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, three loose e-cigarette batteries detonated in his pocket.
E-cigarette explosions can result in severe, disfiguring burns, especially to the face and hands. They can also start fires that might endanger bystanders and damage property.
Lourie said that the rising trend in electronic cigarette injuries makes safety awareness crucial for users of this product.
"Consumers have a right to use the products they buy without risking serious harm," she said. "If you follow the guidelines provided by the manufacturer but suffer injury from an e-cigarette, you may have legal recourse."
